I Learned… 12.17.10

December 17, 2010 at 2:49 pm (I Learned..., Photography)

I had a picture all ready to go this week, but then changed my mind (maybe I’ll use it next week…)
This week, I learned to always have your camera ready….and by ready, I mean battery charged, memory card inserted (how often do I leave it in my computer?), and always nearby.

I was sitting on the couch watching a Charlie Brown Christmas last night, fire roaring in the fireplace, my cat on the top of the couch behind me purring loudly, and the Christmas tree lit behind me. I turned around to pet my cat, when I noticed that I could see the reflection of the tree clearly in his pupils. I gently got up (I didn’t want to disturb him), grabbed the camera, only to find the memory card was still in my computer—darn. I carefully “ejected” it, put it in my camera, then got frustrated when the camera wouldn’t turn on—oh yeah, the battery died while I was outside photographing snowflakes earlier. I ran upstairs to grab the battery, turned around…..and there was my cat standing behind me. He really is my shadow, and doesn’t let me go anywhere alone.

I thought “opportunity lost”, but I figured I’d give it a shot anyway. I grabbed his treats, and him, and tried to “recreate” the scene. He was more interested in sniffing my lens at first (and leaving little nose prints on it…), but he finally settled down, and I *finally* got this.

Sorry for the long-winded write-up, but I learned a valuable lesson—always have that camera ready!!

It’s true. When I want it I don’t have it and when I can’t find a thing to shoot I am lugging it around.

That is a valuable lesson :O) I have had to learn that one the hard way several times :O) I love that you were still able to capture this shot! The photo is so sharp and crisp and your eye is definitely drawn to the Christmas tree reflection. Great photo!!

    Thank you all!
tlhughes, if you do try it with your kids, I’d love to see it! Good luck though—I took nearly 75 shots to get this one—with it being so dark in the room, I was shooting at almost 1/10 of a second, and every slight move he made came up as major blur! Plus the “focus light” kept bothering him and making him flinch—does anyone know if it is possible to turn that light off? I’m guessing it’s there for a reason, and no, I can’t turn it off…
